Many patients, both men and women, find their appearance can be dramatically improved by enhancements to the chin. The balance of chin projection with respect to the position of the lips is critical to the appearance of youth and beauty in a woman while essential to a man who wants to project strength and masculinity. Chins may be small or recessed and associated with disorders of the jaw as well as sleep apnea. A small chin may accentuate the appearance of a heavy neck or skin excess in the neck. Dr. Sobel will design a set of specific procedure options for each individual. In some cases, Dr. Sobel will refer a patient to other specialists for the treatment of jaw or sleep disorders. Examples of various possible procedures follow.
In cases where the chin is simply small (microgenia) or recessed (retrogenia), an implant is used to bring the chin out to proper proportions. A small incision is made under the chin and an implant specifically fitted for the patient is inserted. The procedure is relatively simple and results are immediate with minimum swelling and bruising. Alternatively, facial fillers, such as Juvederm Voluma, Radiesse, Sculptra, and Artefill, among others may be used in lieu of an implant.
The chins and jawlines of some patients are adequate, yet they may appear recessive due to excess fat under the chin and jaw. In these cases, the fat is removed through very small incisions and a liposculpture process. With the fat gone, the chin once again appears normal. If the chin is recessive and there is excess fat under the chin, both an implant and liposculpture may be combined in one procedure.
In the case of an aging face where skin has sagged under the chin line, a facelift will remove and tighten excess skin to bring out the chin. The facelift has the added benefit of rejuvenating the entire midface and neck areas. Sometimes, if the chin is naturally recessive, a chin implant will accompany the facelift in a single procedure.
Dr. Sobel may elect to use one or all three procedures described above to create the most pleasing result depending on each patient’s needs.
